Bio

Dr. John T. Gandy retired as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus from the University of South Carolina. He has been an adjunct faculty member / instructor at Colorado State University since 2003 and has also served in that role at the University of Wyoming since 1997. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Denver and his Master of Social Work degree from California State University-Fresno. Following his MSW degree, he served as a commissioned officer, Captain, in the United States Public Health Service. Upon leaving the service, he worked for the California Youth Authority. After completing his Ph.D. degree, he joined the faculty at the University of South Carolina, where he taught a variety of courses, including research, statistics, policy, and practice. In 1980, he was named Associate Dean in the College of Social Work and served in that capacity until retirement. In addition to retiring as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, he also was a Full Professor. While serving in these capacities, Dr. Gandy was involved in many university-wide activities, and in recognition of this, received the first University of South Carolina Outstanding Service Award. Throughout his 43 years in social work, he made hundreds of presentations and public speeches. In 38 years in higher education, he has been involved in a number of professional publications and grants. Dr. Gandy currently teaches Introduction to Social Work courses at the BSW level, the MSW intensive introductory course, and a Ph.D. course focusing on issues in social work education.
